GREENSBORO-Fresh off of a strong 5-2 win at Savannah State
on Sunday, the North Carolina A&T women's tennis team hits the road to take
on the Davidson Wildcats Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m.
The Aggies look to take some of the momentum they built from
their first win into the match against a tough Davidson squad.
The Aggies (1-3, 1-0 MEAC) will be the second opponent on
the day for Davidson (0-3). The Wildcats take on Gardner-Webb at 10 a.m.,
before meeting the Aggies at 2 p.m., in
the Knoblock Indoor Tennis Center. The
Wildcats have lost to #34 N.C. State, #67 Winthrop and UNC-Asheville this
season. They return nine letterwinners, including four
starters, from last year's 5-20 club.
"They're good, they're on the level of the first three teams
we've played," said Aggies coach James Dunwoody, who's in his seventh year . "The whole key is, can we improve? Will they step up on Saturday and play
better? That's what we look for every
match."
The Aggies tennis team took a couple of days off early this
week to rest their bodies and to get some treatment from the training staff
after grinding out four tough and hard-fought matches in a 10-day span.
But A&T started practicing in earnest on Feb. 1 to
prepare for their next slate of matches, working on rally ball and volleying
skills for competition in both doubles and singles.
The goal, Dunwoody said, is to continue to improve so that
they can win more games in their next four non-conference matches in
preparation for their next conference match.
"We're getting ready for more conference matches," said
Dunwoody. "I scheduled a few really good
teams before our first conference match, and then a few really good teams
before our next conference match. We're
getting ready for Norfolk State."
Dunwoody said that building his team toward picking up their
second MEAC win on Feb. 16 is crucial, as the team needs two conference wins to
qualify for the MEAC tournament in April, something they failed to do a year
ago. After defeating the Tigers down in
Savannah State, the Aggies are halfway to securing that goal.
"Our target is to win all of our conference matches,"
Dunwoody said. "All we do out of conference is to prepare us for conference
matches, and to get our ladies used to playing at a high level of competition. I
don't care if we play Venus and Serena Williams or Sharapova. The expectation is to win. We want to win."
