MEN'S BASKETBALL
PREVIEW
The Game: North Carolina
A&T Aggies (10-13, 5-3) at Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (9-13, 6-2)
When: Saturday, February 4
at 4 p.m.
Where: Moore Gymnasium,
Daytona Beach, Fla.
Must See: Made shots. North
Carolina A&T went more than 13 minutes without a field goal on Monday as
its five-game winning streak came to an end in a 56-41 loss to Delaware State
at Corbett Sports Center. The Aggies 41-point output was their lowest since
they scored 34 points against Washington State in 2007. The off night for the
Aggies included a season-low 14-point second half and a season-low 27.5
shooting percentage. The Aggies will have to get back to knocking down shots in
a place where they have almost two decades of misfortune. The Aggies face
defending MEAC regular-season champion Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Aggies have not won in Daytona Beach since defeating B-CU 89-77 in 1995. It
is a losing streak that stands at 14 games. Before their bad shooting night
against DSU, the Aggies were hitting a lot of shots. Their five-game winning
streak included a 43.4 shooting percentage the floor and 36.2 shooting
percentage from 3-point range. A&T also averaged 80.2 points per game
during the streak.
Bethune-Cookman: The Wildcats are
currently tied for second with Savannah State in the MEAC
standings. The Aggies lead the all-time series 37-29, but the Wildcats have
been successful against the Aggies lately. B-CU is 8-2 against A&T in its
last 10 meetings with the Aggies and head coach Jerry Eaves is 2-10 versus the
Wildcats during his nine seasons with A&T. B-CU's latest win over A&T
came on Jan. 7 when the Wildcats overcame a six-point deficit in the final
minute of the game to beat the Aggies 59-56 at Corbett Sports Center. Kevin
Dukes, the Wildcats leading scorer at 10.7 points per game, was a big part of
that victory for the Wildcats. He scored 23 points, including 11 points in the
final five minutes of the game.
He's Heating Up: If not for Adrian
Powell on Monday, the Aggies would have really had problems scoring on Monday.
Powell was the only Aggie in double figures with 17 points on 6-for-12
shooting. Powell has scored in double figures in his last six games, including
a 22-point, 10-rebound performance against Florida A&M on Jan. 9. In
conference games only, Powell is the Aggies leading scorer at 13.5 points per
game. Powell is also averaging 30.3 minutes per contest in conference play, and
he is shooting 40 percent from the 3-point arc against conference foes.
