Until the fifth inning, North Carolina A&T and Charlotte were headed toward a tight finish with an interesting ending.

Charlotte’s bats did come alive in the fifth, however, as it defeated the Aggies 16-6 at War Memorial Stadium on Tuesday. The Aggies dropped to 4-14 on the season, while Charlotte improved to 17-4.

Jeremy Jones had three-run homer and scored twice for the Aggies, while Patrick Oates registered two RBI. Chris Eggers took the loss despite not giving up an earned run.

Eggers replaced starting pitcher Jonathan Smith in the third with the Aggies trailing 3-0. But the Aggies put Eggers in position to win the game with two runs in the third thanks to a two-out two-run RBI double from Oates that scored Charlie Gamble and Jones to pull the Aggies to within a run, 3-2.

N.C. A&T tied the game in the fourth as senior Joel Battle led the inning off with a single. Catcher Neil Rosser sacrificed him to second base and C.J. Beatty’s single moved Battle to third. It set up Nick Mayo’s RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Things did not go right for the Aggies from there. The 49ers posted eight runs in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth to pull away. Brad McElroy led the 49ers with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Charlotte lead-off hitter Cory Lane also had three RBI.

The Aggies are back in action on Thursday, when they face Cornell from War Memorial Stadium starting at 2 p.m.
