– North Carolina A&T got home runs from current great Jeremy Jones and recently named N.C. A&T Male Freshman of the Year C. J. Beatty, but it wasn’t enough as Gardner-Webb defeated the Aggies 7-2 in baseball action on Wednesday from Gardner Webb’s Varsity Field.

The Aggies fell to 17-29 on the season as they await a big weekend series against Coppin State on May 5-6. The Bulldogs are 21-28 on the season. They received a 2-for-3 day from Jay McConnell with three RBI. Teammate Daniel Cook added two hits and two runs scored.

Jeremy Jones hit his 15th career home with one out in the fourth inning to cut the Bulldogs lead to 5-1. Jones hit his sixth home run of the season and his second home run in as many games. He has reached base safely in his last eight games and is tied for the league-lead in runs scored with 46.

Beatty hit his MEAC-leading 10th home run of the season to lead off the sixth. His shot went to right-center field to cut the Bulldogs lead to 5-2. In his last eight at-bats, Beatty has hit three home runs. The Aggies are 16th in the nation in home runs per game.

But the Bulldogs were able to put a damper on any thoughts of an Aggies rally. In the their half of the sixth, McConnell led off with a single. Aggies reliever Marquis Frink struck out Matt Rizzuto. Joey Testa put runners on first and second with another single. Shea Harris walked to load the bases, leading to Jon Ahearn’s RBI single to put the Bulldogs up four runs.

McConnell helped the Bulldogs add another run with an RBI sacrifice fly in the seventh that scored Cooke.

Jonathan Smith (0-4) took the loss, while Gardner-Webb’s Ben Campbell (6-4) earned the win by going five innings, giving up three hits and surrendering one run.
