Big sixth inning puts Aggies away

Appalachian State put together five-run sixth inning that spearheaded a 14-5 win for the Mountaineers. The Aggies fell to 1-5 overall on the season. Joe McIntyre led the Aggies with a 2-for-5 that included two RBI.  

Jeremy Jones and Charlie Gamble had three hits apiece as the Aggies out-hit the Mountaineers 15-14, but left 12 men on base. The Mountaineers’ Jason Atlenhof went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. Four other Appalachian State hitters had two hits.

Aubrey Edens earned the win for the Mountaineers by pitching eight innings and striking out seven. Jonathan Smith had the loss for the Aggies.

After the Mountaineers took an early 1-0 lead in the ht side of the first, but the Aggies answered in the bottom half as Jones’ single scored Nick Mayo who led off the inning with a triple. Leading 5-1, the Mountaineers took control of the game thanks to four doubles and a fielding error in the sixth.

The Aggies are in action again this weekend when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., for a three-game series against Virginia Tech. Friday’s game is a 3 p.m., Saturday’s game is at 2 p.m., and Sunday’s game starts 1 p.m.
