Score Game 1
Box Score Game 2 Jeremy Jones, Nelson Santos and C.J. Beatty had two hits apiece in the first game. Jones and Beatty both had RBIs. Nick Mayo led the Aggies in the second game with two hits a run scored and a RBI. The Phoenix’s sweep of the Aggies dropped the Aggies to 3-8 on the season as they lost their eighth straight game. Elon’s Game 1 starter Steven Hensley pitched eight innings, struck out 11 and gave up seven hits in earning the win. But the Aggies were able to take the lead against Hensley in the sixth. Santos started the rally with a two-out single to right. Santos moved two bases on a wild pitch, setting up Beatty’s RBI single to right to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead. Hensley would get all the help he needed in the Phoenix’s half of the sixth, however. Greg Annarummo’s two-run RBI triple highlighted a four-run sixth for Elon that chased away starter Tim Johnson and gave the Phoenix a 5-2 lead. Johnson pitched 5.2 innings, gave up five runs, three of them earned and struck out seven as he lost his first decision of the season. In the second game, Elon used four pitchers to strike out 12 Aggies. Starter Ken Ferrer led the way with six strikeouts over 5.2 innings. John Primus (0-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs over three innings pitched. Again, the Aggies were able to take the lead on the Phoenix. Mayo led off the third with a single and moved to second on an error. Jones followed with a RBI double to left-center field to score Mayo and tie the game at 1. After Jones was caught stealing going to third, Santos walked and advanced to third on another Phoenix error. The third error of the inning by the Phoenix – this one a Nick Rogers grounder to second – allowed Santos to score for a 2-1 Aggies lead. Again, the Phoenix would answer with a huge inning. Elon scored six runs in its half of the third to take a 7-2 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run homer by Bennett Davis. The Aggies return to action Sunday when they conclude their three-game series with the Phoenix at 1 p.m., from Latham Park. |
