AGGIES SEE MORE TOUGH PITCHING IN LOSS TO ELON

Box Score
ELON, MARCH 9, 2008 –
Elon used effective pitching and timely hitting to once again defeat North Carolina A&T in baseball action. On Sunday, the Phoenix completed a three-game sweep of the Aggies with a 7-3 victory.

The Aggies fell to 3-9 on the season, while Elon improved to 13-1 on the season. The culprit that shut down the Aggies on Sunday was Elon starter Jimmy Reyes. He went six innings, struck out six and surrendered three runs on the day. Over the three-game series, the Aggies struck out 39 times.

In each of the three games, the Aggies were able to build a lead, only to see the Phoenix erase in its half of the inning. It happened in the first inning on Sunday from Latham Park. Reyes retired the first two Aggies he faced, but a red hot Nelson Santos kept his hot streak going by singling through the left side of the infield. Beatty continued the two-out rally with a single to right field.

Reyes compounded his problems by walking Nick Rogers to load the bases. There has been no better man to step up to the plate with the bases loaded in his career than Joe McIntyre. McIntyre came into the game 11-for-25 with the bases loaded in his career. He added to that total with a single to right field that scored Santos and Beatty and gave the Aggies an early 2-0 lead.

But the Phoenix answered the Aggies rally again. Elon responded by sending nine men to the plate and scoring four runs. Chris Dove led off the bottom of the first with a triple off the wall in right-center. Aggie starter Donald Howerton then stuck out the next Phoenix batters before Bennett Davis singled home Dove.

Chase Austin followed up a walk to Greg Annarummo by lacing a two-out RBI double to left-center to put the Phoenix ahead 3-2. An Aggie error allowed Neal Pritchard to reach and Austin to score the fourth Elon run.

Elon added a run apiece in the second and third innings to take a 6-2 lead. The Aggies close to within three runs when Neil Rosser singled up the middle to score Joe McIntyre who reached on a single in the fourth. The Phoenix added another run in its half of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Davis. Howerton went 4.2 innings, gave up seven runs, five of them earned and struck out six in a losing effort.

Aggies reliever Marquis Frink pitched excellently in his place. Frinnk pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball, did not surrender a hit, walked two and struck out five. The Aggies will try to break their nine-game losing streak on Tuesday when they host UNC-Asheville at War Memorial Stadium starting at 3 p.m.
