In an effort to help North Carolina A&T baseball fans to dinner early, Aggies starter Jody Calloway made quick work of Campbell on Tuesday. Calloway pitched a complete-game one-hitter, gave up one run and struck out nine to lead the Aggies to a 6-1 win over the Camels at War Memorial Stadium.

It took Calloway just two hours to earn his first victory of the season and the Aggies fourth win in five games. Calloway’s performance followed a three-game series in which the Aggies pitching staff surrendered just five earned runs in three games. In the Aggies last five games, their ERA is 2.20.

Before Tuesday’s game, Calloway had made six appearances, pitched 8.2 innings and posted an inflated 9.35 ERA. But his off-speed pitches were working for him against Campbell and it was complemented by his fastball. The Camels only hit of the game was not a cheap one. Brandon Scott launched a 2-2 pitch that bounced off the left field wall.

Scott’s double scored Ryan Hamme from second. Hamme reached base on one of two Calloway walks. Hamme moved to second a passed ball, which set up Scott’s RBI double. The run actually gave the Camels a 1-0 lead. The Aggies offense and Calloway’s arm took over from there.

Jeremy Jones, who finished with three hits and three RBIs, put the Aggies on the board in their half of the fourth. Jones hit a double that scored Joe McIntyre who reached on an error. Two batters later Nick Rogers singled home Jones to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead. The Aggies added two more runs in the fifth on Camel miscues.

Lester Rivenbark reached on a throwing error and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Wesley Edwards. Nick May singled him home and moved to second on an error. A Jones single bought Mayo home for a 4-1 Aggies lead. The Aggies added two more runs in the seventh and then watched Calloway finish up his dominance. Calloway did not allow a Camels base runner between the fifth and eighth innings.

He walked the first batter he faced and ninth and then hit the second batter he faced with a pitch. After a talk from head coach Keith Shumate, Calloway settled down and struck out the next three batters to improve the Aggies to 7-11 on the season as Mayo finished with two hits, two runs scored and a RBI.

The Camels dropped to 6-11 as Josh Fish (0-3) took the loss. The Aggies are back in action on Wednesday when they face Charlotte 3 p.m., Wednesday at War Memorial Stadium.
