The North Carolina A&T baseball team closed out the Charleston Firefighter Memorial Challenge with a 9-2 loss to No. 23 Louisville. The Aggies went 0-3 for the Challenge as they played some of the best teams in the country.

“We play a tough schedule because we play in a tough conference,’’ said head coach Keith Shumate. “These games get us ready for the challenges in our conference. We have tough pitching and great hitters in our conference, so these games get us prepared.”

The Aggies also had losses to N.C. State and The Citadel in the Challenge, falling to 3-5 on the season. The Aggies managed five runs and 15 hits against the tough competition.

On Sunday, the Aggies were led by Nelson Santos who had two hits on the day. Freshman Donald Howerton (1-1) took the loss on the mound. He went five innings, gave up 10 hits and surrendered six runs, while striking out six batters. The Aggies trailed 4-0 in the fourth when they got on the board for the first time.

Joe McIntyre had a RBI single through the right side to score Jeremy Jones. But the Cardinals put the game away in the fifth thanks to Dominguez lead-off homer and a RBI single by Mickits that eventually served to end Howerton’s day.

The Aggies return to action Wednesday when they face the Wolfpack again, this time in Raleigh, N.C. The game begins at 3 p.m.
