GREENSBORO, March 10, 2009 –
South Carolina Upstate gradually built a big lead over the North Carolina A&T baseball team on Tuesday and eventually defeated the Aggies 8-3 at War Memorial Stadium.

The Aggies were led by Lester Rivenbark who went 3-for-4 on the day. Nick Rogers and C.J. Beatty had two hits apiece.

The Spartans slowly built their lead throughout the game. They scored a run apiece in the first, second and fourth innings before putting together a two-run fifth that allowed them to breathe a little easier. Keith Bisgounis led off the fifth with a single off of Aggies starter Ruben Torrellas. Jeff Medley followed with another single.

Left-hander Jared Via replaced Torrellas and got Brian Dempsey to groundout. But Bisgounis and Medley were able to move to second and third. It allowed Bisgounis to score on a wild pitch to give the Spartans a 4-0 advantage. Austin Moyer followed with an RBI single to score Medley for a 5-0 lead.

The Spartans added two runs in the seventh and one in the ninth to put the Aggies down eight going into the ninth. The Aggies were able to get on the board in their home half. Back-to-back singles by Rogers and Beatty put runners on first and second. Cyril Daniel walked to load the bases, which was followed by a wild pitch that ended the Spartans’ chances of a shutout.

George Hines would follow with a single up the middle to score Beatty. After another RBI single, this one from Rivenbark, USC Upstate reliever Teddy Fallon struck out Carvell Copeland and got James Howard to fly out to first.
