AGGIES FALL TO SPARTANS

The two Division I baseball programs in Greensboro played their in their annual Gate City Classic at NewBridge Bank Park on Tuesday with UNC Greensboro using a strong sixth inning to defeat North Carolina A&T 13-4.

Nick Rogers led the Aggies by going 3-for-5 with two RBIs, including a home run. Catcher Jaron Neal also had three hits and he scored a run. C.J. Beatty went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Aggies and the Spartans were playing at NewBridge Bank Park for the fourth consecutive season. On Tuesday, the Spartans jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage before the Aggies began to rally. The rally started with a two-run homer from Rogers in the third inning that cut the Spartans lead to 4-2. It was Rogers’ fifth home run of the season and the 15th of his career.

The Aggies would continue to chip away at Spartans starter Matt Parish. Chris Mullins would lead off the fourth inning with a single down the left field line. Marquis Riley would replace him at first base as he reached on a fielder’s choice. Neal would put runners at first and second with another single. It would set up James Howard’s RBI single to right field that scored Riley to trim the lead to 4-3.

But the Spartans pulled away in the sixth. Leading 5-3, the Spartans benefited from a walk and a hit by pitch that led to a six-run inning. The Aggies dropped to 7-16 on the season. They return to action Wednesday  afternoon at 3 at War Memorial Stadium against Wofford.
