GREENSBORO, N.C., January 28, 2006 - For Shea Stark, the chance to play another collegiate sport was too good to pass up. The senior from Glendale, Ariz., had just completed her volleyball career when her coach, Millicent Sylvan gave her some friendly advice. “I asked her if she wanted to be a part of the bowling team,” said Sylvan, who got a glimpse of Shea’s bowling ability during the volleyball team outings during the off season. “She has the technique to be a really good bowler and she has great work ethic, so I know her game will improve.” Sylvan suggested that Stark speak with bowling coach Courtney Stith, who was in need of a bowler. Stith allowed Stark to practice with the team, and after a few sessions, the Aggies had a new member on the squad. “I’ve always loved to bowl,” Stark said. “It’s different from volleyball, because you are more in control with your success. It’s just you, the ball, the lane, and the pins. The individual has a lot more involvement in this sport. We have a team concept, but you send the ball to the pins and when your technique is right, you score.” Stark is competing in her first tournament in front of some familiar faces. The Aggie Invitational is being held at Gate City Lanes in Greensboro, where the team holds its practices. Many of the people who came to see her hit volleyballs will now watch her bowl. “It’s cool that I get to bowl my first tournament at home,“ Stark said. “We finally get a home crowd and the people who have supported our athletic teams will get to see this team compete. I know that we’ll do well here.”
AGGIES COMPETE IN DAY TWO OF INVITATIONAL Jamie Brungard posted a score of 1,029 for the day to lead the Aggies in Day Two of the Aggie Invitational. Brungard and teammate Jessica Florit each won three of their five team matches. Florit posted the team’s high game of 200 against New Jersey City University. Action of the final day of the invitational will begin Sunday morning at 8. Tournament presentations will follow the completion of all events.
