YOUNG AGGIES LOSE TO SPARTANS

Box Score
NORFOLK, Va., September 30, 2006 --
For a young team trying to build depth, the Aggies received some encouraging news in the midst of their 42-20 loss to Norfolk State in MEAC football action on Saturday. Early on the Spartans had an answer for everything the Aggies wanted to do with speedy redshirt freshman quarterback Herb Miller.

So instead, the Aggies turned to their other redshirt freshman quarterback Wayne Campbell. Campbell completed 20 of 31 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns. Campbell set the school record for passing yards and completions by a freshman.

"I thought Wayne did a good job against a very good Spartans team,'' said Aggies head coach Lee Fobbs. "We just didn't start out the way we wanted to -- we started a little slow because they defended Herb so well, which hurt us. Once we mixed up with Herb and Wayne, we did some good things, but we were behind by then."

The Aggies went three-and-out in their first five offensive possessions. Thanks to excellent field position and a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown by Norfolk State's Rashad Howard, the Spartans took advantage by taking a 21-0 lead in the first half.

Campbell stepped in and gave the Spartans a different look than the sprint-out capabilities of Herb Miller. Campbell completed two passes to Andre Garth and had a 19-yard completion to Curtis Walls on his way to marching the Aggies 68 yards in 10 plays. The drive ended with Campbell finding freshman running back Dion McNair on a 13-yard screen pass for a touchdown.

The score sparked some momentum for the Aggies as LaShawn McLean sacked Norfolk State quarterback Casey Hansen, forcing him to fumble at the Norfolk State 14. Junior defensive Antonio Johnson recovered the fumble for the Aggies putting them in prime position to get to within a touchdown.

Three plays later, however, Terrell Whitehead intercepted Campbell in the end zone to halt the Aggies drive. Norfolk State made the most of the opportunity by putting together two plays that crippled the Aggies chances of getting back in the ball game.

On a 2nd-and7 from the Spartans own 7-yard line, Hansen found James Callahan open across the middle for a 17-yard gain and a first down. Four plays later Hansen connected with Derrick Baker, who was running down the field by himself, for a 53-yard touchdown pass to give the Spartans a 28-7 lead.

The Aggies had a chance to respond as they took over at the 50 when the Spartans kick-off went out of bounds. Campbell tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Garth, but Garth was called for offensive pass interference, negating the touchdown. The penalty eventually led the Aggies to settle for a 27-yard field goal, which Ross Vosburg missed.

"When you have opportunities to score, you've got to put the ball in the end zone,'' said Fobbs. "We've done a good job of moving the ball into scoring position, but when we get down there, we have to finish."

Campbell would lead the Aggies on two more scoring drives, but big pass plays by Hansen, who threw for 287 yards and a touchdown.

"We had some blown coverages on the back in, so they were able to beat us with some deep balls,'' said Fobbs. "As the season goes on we're going to see some improvements and then there are some things that are going to come up that we have to fix. We'll work on our coverages next week and get better."
