AGGIES ADD VARIETY TO BACKFIELD

GREENSBORO, August 17, 2007 -- Life without variety is boring. If there was only one kind of restaurant, car or style of house, the excitement over making the right choice wouldn’t exist. A year ago, the Aggies backfield lacked variety. This season Fobbs has the excitement of choice.

The Aggies top backs last season were power runners. Junior college transfer David Robinson and Clemson transfer Demerick Chancellor change that. Once Robinson breaks into the opponent’s secondary, he will be hard to catch. Chancellor averaged 6.1 yards per carry last season at Clemson and had two 100-yard games.

“They’re not backs you’re going to turn and hand it to 25 or 30 times a game,’’ said Fobbs. “But they are backs who don’t need a lot of carries to accumulate a lot of yardage. They’re homerun hitters and that’s what we need.”

Meanwhile, Ferguson is the back you hand it to multiple times per game. Even though he is a power back, he is hard to tackle. That coupled with the fact he does have breakaway speed, also makes him a threat to go the distance like he did against S.C. State when he scored on a 75-yard touchdown run. What is even more thrilling about the Aggies leading rusher last season is that he was never completely healthy after he sustained a knee injury during the first game of the season. Yet, he still had three 100-yard games. In short yardage situations the Aggies can turn to either sophomore Dion McNair or veteran back Chaz Truesdale.

Although he is never the starter at the beginning of the season, Truesdale always finds a way to be a factor in the Aggies running game. McNair earned valuable time last season when Ferguson was out with an injury. “I’m looking forward to the practices,’’ said Ragsdale. “All these guys are competitive; they all want to play, so I know they’re going to get after it. I think they’re all going to get some touches this year.”

The fullback position will be split between the Tre’s. Senior Oritz “Trey” Green and junior Eugene “Tre” Parnell give the Aggies even more variety. Green is a four-year starter who is an excellent blocker and a very good receiver out of the backfield. Parnell is an excellent runner and a viable go-to-back in the Aggies offense. He averaged 4.9 yards per carry last season.

“I’m expecting my guys to make a positive contribution. We’ll be a little more productive this year because of the speed we added. We’re trying to control the line of scrimmage this year and I see us as being an integral part of that.”
