Wills averages 8.3 rebounds throughout Classic

The North Carolina A&T men’s basketball shot 24 percent from the field and 20 percent from 3-point range in its last game of the John Thompson Foundation Classic. Army took advantage to earn a 63-49 win.

Junior guard Austin Ewing led the way with 12 points, while Steven Rush closed out the afternoon with 10. Junior center Jason Wills, who averaged 8.3 rebounds in the three-game Classic, had eight points and seven boards.

Midway through the first half, Wills grabbed a steal and scored on a layup to tie the game at 11. But Jamal Brown, who came off the bench to score 27 points on 6-for-11 shooting from 3-point range, gave the Cadets the lead back at 13-11.

In the process, he sparked a 7-0 run as the Cadets increased their to lead seven, 18-11, with 8:52 remaining in the first half. Junior guard Angelo Hernandez moved the Aggies to within four, 18-14, on two free throws at 3:08 mark of the first half.

But Brown, who had 19 of his game-high 27 in the first half, would take over as the half emerged. He scored eight of the Cadets’ final 10 points of the half during a 10-1 run that put Army ahead 32-19 at the half.

The Aggies (0-3) were not able to get any closer than nine the rest of the way. The Aggies were never out-rebounded in the classic, and guard Derek Crumpton 47.4 percent throughout the three games.

The Aggies will travel to Dayton, Ohio to play the Flyers on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Aggies play their home opener on Monday, November 20 at Corbett Sports Center at 8 p.m.
