Coach Eaves on Steven Rush's early start
"Steve was tremendous the first 8 or 9 minutes of the game. But the team
has to learn how to keeps its composure with chances where we could have
put the game away. We just missed layup after layup and free throw after
free throw. So we were just going to have to continue working that out."
Coach Eaves on
Greensboro native Steven Rush playing against WSSU
"He talked
about playing Winston-Salem State all summer. It’s just in his blood. He
grew up watching it, so it’s a tremendous thing to him. I am glad
they’re in the conference. It’s great for both schools. In the state,
you’ve got Carolina versus Duke. But you’ve also got the
A&T-Winston-Salem State Rams rivalry. That’s very good too. I am glad it
started again.”
Coach Eaves
on the sellout crowd
"I certainly wasn't surprised by the size of the crowd.
I knew we would be
packed to the rafters absolutely."
Coach Eaves on shot blocker Thomas Coleman's presence in the game
"He’s just a tremendous attribute to our program and a tremendous young
man. He does everything I ask and he’s got super timing. He's as long as
he can be. (WSSU) Coach Collins did a tremendous job of staying small
quiet a bit, they just couldn’t hit the threes. But when they attacked
the basket he is a presence in there. He was very much a force when they
were making their run in the 2nd half. He got two deflections
and a traveling call."
Coach Eaves on the Aggies defense
"Anytime you hold them to 56 points, you've done a tremendous job. A lot
of it had to do with them missing shots. But you know we tried to
contest shots we tried to put pressure on. We try to come up with some
steals in our press, just like they did. I think both teams played
tremendously well defensively. It’s just that Steve got us off to a
great start. After that we shot the threes the same way they did. I
think Austin Ewing made the only threes in the second half, so both
teams were very cool. But our defense since the Morgan State game has
been the defense of old since I have been here for 4 1/2 half years. We
are holding people in the fifties and sixties. That’s what we do. That’s
how we play.
Coach Eaves on the Aggies four-game winning streak after playing
the toughest non-conference schedule in the country
We had THE toughest non-conference schedule in the country, so let’s
don’t say tough. It may have been too tough, and we bit off a little
more then we could chew early. I still think we have a little residue
because we are not playing well yet. We don’t have full confidence yet
at all positions, but I think its coming. We're going to continue to
improve, hopefully we can hit that t stride and see how far we can take
this winning streak. We've got three more games at home -- South
Carolina State is a great opponent -- I don’t know what they did today
against Norfolk State but they're going to come in here right behind
us in the standing. It's going to be very competitive. "
Steven Rush on playing WSSU
"This is the first time we have played them in 10 years. We know they
are going to come right back at us when we go down to Winston in
February. We came out well and played hard. We knew that Winston was
going to be a tough team. We watched film on them, and they played hard.
We wanted to match their intensity early. I wanted to get up for my team
and help us get off to a good start, and I think I did well in
accomplishing that goal."
Rush on what
the Rams tried to do to him defensively
"They came at me
with a lot of different players. It is something that I saw last year
when I started making a name for myself. I give credit to my
teammates. They do a good job of getting me open. It is easy for me to
stand out there and make a jump shot as opposed to setting all the picks
and doing all the dirty work. We just work as a team."
Rush on the
importance of the Winston-Salem State rivalry
“We’ve been
anticipating this all year long, especially after football season.
Winston beat us pretty good in football. Talk all-around campus has been
about how we need to make up for that.”
Rush on his
early start
"It is all about
playing 40 minutes. I don’t think we played 40 minutes. We played well
when we needed to and we got off to a great start and we kind of just
held that lead. We got to learn how to finish game too. I feel like we
played a great first half, but we played poorly in the second half. I
don’t think we scored as nearly as many points. We gave up a lot of
layups. We've got to tighten up if we plan on winning this thing."
WSSU head coach Bobby Collins on Rush's fast
start
"He had a dead lock on the rim, he was just on fire. He was shooting
from 20-25 feet from the basket and there was nothing we could really
do. I was just glad when coach subbed for him and got him out of the
game. That was the only way we could stop him tonight. We did a pretty
god job in the second half of containing him making him take tough
shots."
Coach Collins on the rivalry
"I just told them that if I have to be a rah, rah coach and get you
pumped up to play your rivalry school then you are really not a player.
To come in a place like this -- in a hostile environment -- you have to
be mentally tough a mentally focused and that is something that we were
obviously not tonight."
Coach Collins on playing at Irvin-Corbett
Court
"It seems like tonight the crowd was just right on my back. My team
could not hear (point guard) Roy Peake speak, and they could not hear
the plays that we were trying to call. That is why we kind of got
confused with our offence and if we did not call a offensive set during
a dead ball then it was going to be very difficult to call because the
crowd was so loud and so involved. You know coming in that A&T has a
tremendous advantage any time they play here. The sixth man and the fans
here at A&T are very crucial, very involved and vital to their success."
