WILSON EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Wilson leads the Aggies in scoring

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., December 8, 2008 – North Carolina A&T men’s basketball senior Nic Wilson doesn’t see the big deal. After two years of playing behind outstanding players and going some nights without earning a minute of playing time, Wilson is just fine with not hearing his name called as a starter.

He’s shown his pleasure with his role over the Aggies first eight games of the season. On Monday he was awarded for his acceptance of being a reserve by being named the MEAC Player of the Week after scoring a career-high 26 points in the Aggies 93-66 blowout win of Norfolk State.

“Too much is made of starting,’’ said Wilson. “Even though I don’t start, I get the same minutes, and I play with the same players. “It really doesn’t make a difference to me.”

Wilson is a Trenton, N.J., native who is in his third season of action with the Aggies after transferring in from Bowling Green. Over his first two years, Wilson averaged just 3.1 points per game. This season, he leads the Aggies in scoring at 13.0 points per game.

“I shoulder some of the blame for some of that,’’ said head coach Jerry Eaves. “I had him in the starting lineup last year probably before it was his time. This year there is an understanding that this is his opportunity, and he is going out there playing aggressively. He’s giving it all he has.”

In the Aggies win over Norfolk State on Saturday, Wilson began his march for player of the week honors early. He scored 13 of his 26 in the first 10 minutes of the game after entering the game at the 15-minute mark of the first half.

“I came in and played behind some good players,’’ said  Wilson. “I got a chance to follow their leadership. I feel like this year is my turn to step up and lead.”
