AGGIES SWEEP WEEKLY HONORS

Every honoree is a freshman

GREENSBORO, March 26, 2007 – Head softball coach Mamie Jones’ freshman class is quickly becoming the talk of the league and that chatter should increase after last week’s performance leading the Aggies softball program to sweep all three MEAC weekly honors with freshmen holding the brooms.

Freshman Lillian Bullock earned MEAC Player of the Week honors, while freshman Tangala Conover won the Rookie of the Week award and freshman Sasha Philpot took the MEAC Pitcher of the Week recognition. N.C. A&T, who has for most of this season started five freshmen in the infield, start this week 16-17 overall and 4-0 in the MEAC.

Bullock (5-foot-6, Anchorage, Alaska) gave full indication early on that she would bring power to the Aggies lineup. In her first two games as an Aggie she went a combined 5-for-5 at the plate with five RBI, three runs scored and two home runs. She has already surpassed the single-season home run record with 12, and there are still two months remaining in the season.

Last week, she led the Aggies to a 6-0 week by hitting .632 with 12 hits, eight RBI and two home runs. She leads the team in home runs and RBI (31) and is second on the team in batting average (.387).

Conover (5-11, Summerville, S.C.) returned Friday from an injury that had sidelined her for two weeks. Conover quickly made up for lost time. She went 8-for-14 in four games played, including a home run, a double and three RBI in a 13-4 win over Florida A&M.

Philpot has been excellent in replacing Latronda Anderson as the Aggies ace. She once went 21.2 innings without giving up an earned run before Florida A&M broke that up on Friday with two earned runs in the sixth inning.

She still managed to go 3-0 last week with a 1.67 ERA, including a shutout win over Winston-Salem State. She faced 84 batters over that three-game stretch and struck out 17 of them. She has won her last six decisions and is 10-5 on the season.

The Aggies are back in action, Tuesday, March 26 when they take on UNC-Greensboro at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex at 1 p.m.
