Box Score The streak was in jeopardy when she made a miscue on a Delaware State stolen base in the bottom of the seventh. As the tying run for the Hornets – Courtney Taylor -- tried to advance to third off of White’s mistake, White ran down the ball, tossed a perfect throw to third baseman Tangala Conover. Conover laid the tag on Taylor to end the game and secure a 5-4 win for N.C. A&T at Randazzo Softball Park.
The win advanced the Aggies to the championship round of the tournament
where they will play Howard Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The Aggies must be
Howard twice in order to capture their first-ever MEAC title. The
Conover tags out Delaware
State's Courtney Taylor to end the game.
N.C. A&T trailed 3-2 going into bottom of the sixth. An error by
Delaware State first baseman Jacinda Poni allowed Lillian Bullock to
reach safely. Hornets pitcher Megan Lambertz then walked Tabitha Veney
to put runners on first and second. The Hornets then turned to relief
pitcher Brittany Ruark to slow down the Aggies rally. Adia followed with
a groundball to first base. Poni threw the ball away, allowing Dial to
reach second base and Bullock to tie the game at 3.
Sylvia Felder stepped up and flew out to deep center field for a sacrifice fly that scored Veney from third to give the Aggies the lead at 4-3. After Britney Reddick flew out to left field, Chaola Simmons kept the inning going by singling to center field, moving pinch-runner Channing Statham to third base.
An insurance run was added for the Aggies when White earned an infield
single. As Hornets second baseman Nicole Demers tried to throw out the
speedy White, she threw the ball wide left of first base as Statham came
home to give Aggies starter Sasha Philpot a two-run lead to work with
going into the top of the seventh.
But Philpot would open the inning by hitting pinch-hitter Courtney Sams with a pitch, allowing her to reach first. Aggies lead to 8-5. Philpot got Lambertz to ground out to second for the fist out of the inning. The grounder advanced pinch-runner Ashley Fisher to second. Catrina Shockley moved the Aggies one step closer to the championship with a slow groundball back to the Philpot for out No. 2. The Hornets would not make it that easy, however. Catrina Ansbach singled to center field, allowing Fisher to score to put the Hornets down by one run. With Sha Tabor at the plate, Taylor, who was pinch-running for Ansbach attempted to steal second. White, who was covering at second, fumbled away Veney’s throw down to second base. Tabor alertly headed toward third, where White made her impressive throw down to third to throw out Taylor and send the Aggies into celebration. Philpot earned the win by giving up just one earned run on eight hits. Philpot improved to 17-10 and broke Latronda Anderson’s school record for pitching wins in a season, which stood at 16. Simmons and White had two hits apiece and Reddick recorded two RBI. |
