AGGIES LOSE SLUGFEST TO UNC-W

Seven Aggies have multiple-hit games

ROCK HILL, S.C., March 10, 2007 North Carolina A&T displayed another exhibition of power on Saturday against UNC-Wilmington, but unfortunately the Seahawks bats were working too in a 17-13 slugfest won by the Seahawks. The Aggies also lost to Albany 13-3 in the first game of the Winthrop adidas Invitational on Saturday in softball action.

Yahamma White, Tabitha Veney and Lillian Bullock had three hits apiece as the Aggies pounded out 16 hits. The Aggies had seven players record multiple-hit games, and five different Aggies had two RBI.

The Aggies trailed 9-6 going into the fourth inning. White started the Aggies rally with a single to right field. After a Veney sacrificed White to second, White stole third to put herself in prime scoring position. But the Aggies would need an impressive two-out rally after Jessie Larson flied out.

They got it as White scored on a passed ball, and Tangala Conover put Aggies back on the bags with a walk. Bullock singled and later moved into scoring position when she and Conover stole their respective bases to put runners on third and second.

Freshman Britney Reddick tied the game at 9 with a two-run RBI double that scored Conover and Bullock. The Seahawks would regain the lead in the fifth, however. Meghan Murray’s two-run homer gave the Seahawks an 11-9 lead. UNC-Wilmington would then begin a two-out rally of its own. Morgan Walters and Krista Searle put together back-to-back singles. Searle’s single scored Walters and Lisa White’s single scored Searle from second for a 13-9 lead.

Both teams would keep scoring going into the seventh, with the Seahawks leading 15-11. Paige Wakefield blasted a two-run homer in the seventh to put the Seahawks up by six runs. The Aggies tried to make a comeback in the home half of the seventh, but came up short. White and Veney hit back-to-back home runs, Brittney Lehrscall settled down and struck out Larson and forced Conover into a groundout to short to end the game.

N.C. A&T’s big inning came in the first when Larson and Dial’s two-run homers in the same inning gave the Aggies a 4-3 lead. The Aggies power has been impressive this season. They hit a total of seven home runs last season, now they have 28.
