ELON, February 21, 2009
The North Carolina A&T and Southern Illinois usually don’t meet on the softball field, so when the two teams got together again on Sunday they played another outstanding game.

The Salukis scored three runs in extra innings to down the Aggies 4-2 at the Elon Invitational. Elon defeated the Aggies in the second game, 13-1. Yahamma White went 2-for-5 and Britney Reddick was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Luper took another tough-luck loss. On Saturday, Luper lost a 2-1 decision after the Salukis scored on a walk-off single in the seventh. It took the Salukis 10 innings on Sunday before they were able to get to Luper.

Luper had not allowed a hit in extra innings. In accordance with international tiebreaking rules, the Salukis had a runner – Katie Wilson – placed on second base to start the inning.

Wilson stole third to put the Salukis closer to taking the lead. Luper, who had not given up a hit over the first two extra inning stanzas, gave up an infield hit to Chelsea Held. In attempt to prevent Wilson from scoring, Held was able to advance to second to put two runners in scoring position for SIU. Jayme Wamsley also hit a slow roller in the infield that allowed Wilson to score to give SIU a 2-1 lead.

Alicia Junker earned the Salukis third straight hit with a single to center field to score Held. The Salukis closed out their scoring with Mallory Duran earning a bases loaded walk to put a three-run deficit in front of the Aggies going into bottom half of the 10th.

The Aggies did make a run at rallying. Reddick scored on a fielder’s choice from Ryanne Hill. The inning was continued when Tangala Conover reached on an error to put the winning run at the plate. But Jessie Larson grounded out to end the game.

SIU started the scoring in the third with a home run to center field by Katie Schmidt. Reddick answered her home run with her own home run to center that tied the game at 1. After the loss to Elon, the Aggies dropped to 4-4 on the season.

The Aggies are back in action Friday when they host the N.C. A&T Invitational at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex. The Aggies play Hampton at 2 p.m.
