LADY
AGGIES SPLIT TWO WITH NSU
Loftin picks up three RBI in Game 2
GREENSBORO,
N.C., March 22, 2004 – The N.C. A&T
softball team was one hit away from sweeping a doubleheader against Norfolk
State on Tuesday. Starting pitcher Micki Rodriguez forced a pop up off the
bat of Latronda Anderson with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh
as the Lady Spartans won Game 2 5-4.
In game one of the doubleheader, Anderson pitched six
shutout innings and blasted a three-run homer over the center field fence to
end the game 10-0 win in six innings thanks to the 10-run rule
The Lady Aggies four-run sixth inning in Game 1
came with two outs as Sibol Loftin started the push with a single to right.
Lorraine Geiger then reached on an error. Tabitha Veney scored Loftin on an
RBI single to the left to give the Lady Aggies a 7-0 lead.
From there, Anderson would end it on a 2-1
pitch off the arm reliever Lenore Heron. Anderson was 2-for-4 at the plate.
On the mound, she struck out five over six innings and surrendered just two
hits. Veney went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
The Lady Aggies did not get off to such a quick
start in Game 2. The Lady Spartans took advantage of three N.C. A&T errors
in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Anderson came in to relieve starter
Adia Dial and gave an unearned run in the third to push the Lady Spartans
lead to 5-1 in the third.
Loftin helped the Lady Aggies cut into the lead
in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Chaola Simmons and Dial.
Two innings later, pinch-hitter Christie Davis
reached on an error with one out. Dial reached first with a perfectly
executed bunt. Loftin, who was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI in Game 2, singled to
center field to plate Davis and pull the Lady Aggies to within one run at
5-4.
With runners on third and second, Geiger was
intentionally walked. Veney then hit a grounder back to Rodriguez on the
mound who threw home to force Dial out at the plate. It set up Anderson’s
final at bat. But she could not end Game 2 on a positive note.
Anderson’s win in Game 1 pushed her record to
3-4. Dial’s Game 2 loss dropped her to 2-4. The Lady Aggies are 6-10 on the
season and 1-2 in the conference.
