Results The Aggies split their season/home opener at Corbett Sports Center, Friday. Last season, N.C. A&T pushed just enough at the end to claim victory at the HBCU Relay meet, winning the last pair of events. This time, Howard returned the favor as they won the 400-yard freestyle individual medley. N.C. A&T got off to a strong start, as the Aggies put two teams in the first event, the 300-yard butterfly relay, scoring a second and third place finish. The 300-yard backstroke relay team of Donielle Campbell, Gia Wright and Kirsten Lewis won its event with a time of 2:47.84, giving the Aggies 14 more points. Howard placed second and third to pull even after two events. The Aggies continued their strategic placing of events with two teams in the 300-yard breaststroke relay, taking second and fourth. Howard won the event, but trailed 48-46 after three events. But the turning point of the meet came during the 300-yard breaststroke. Howard won the event, but Florida A&M surprised the Aggies, taking third place and two critical points. Howard took advantage, winning three of the next four relays to take a 132-128 lead into the final event. The Bison team of Aminah and Nzingah Murphy, along with Polo Edwards and Nadya Nicholas cruised to victory in the 400 freestyle IM with a time of 3:47.41, to secure the win. I felt we swam very well today, despite the adversity, said coach Shawn Hendrix. This team really fought through a tough meet, swimming back-to-back events like this. It took a lot of heart for them to compete. Those two events, the breaststroke and the individual medley were the difference. Our rivalry is so close that anything can happen, and this time, they had just enough. But we will see them again. The highlight of the meet featured a pair of sisters competing together for the first time in Aggie swimming, as Gia and Czamille Wright joined Donielle Campbell and Jewel Wright to take home first place in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Aggies will return to the Corbett Sports Center on Saturday, Oct. 28, against Radford University at noon. |
