Gia Wright takes first in 100 breaststroke and 200 IM
Results Radford won each of the first three events to take an early 34-16 lead. N.C. A&T stormed back into the meet, as freshman Vinetae Wynn took her first career individual victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.93. Gia Wright won the 200-yard IM in 2:21.01, to bring the Aggies within 46-41. The Highlanders benefited from an Aggie miscue to increase its lead. Christina Reyes won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.02 to put the Highlanders up 57-49. N.C. A&T was poised to cut into the deficit, but Wright was disqualified in her main event, the 100-yard backstroke, which gave an extra nine points to the Highlanders. Boosted by the advantage, the visitors won three of the final four events to secure the meet. Wright recovered to win the 100-yard backstroke in the best race of the day, defeating Kendal Spradlin by an arm’s length, with a time of 1:10.02. “We were really close to taking this meet today,” said coach Shawn Hendrix. “It’s important for us to win [against] Radford at home because they get to dive at their place. We just made some critical mistakes, with a disqualification and a slip on the blocks. Our team just can’t do that and expect to win. I was pleased with the fact that we were able to finish strong, even after our mistakes. We just have to concentrate and not be so antsy at the start of our short sprints.” N.C. A&T will face Gardner-Webb and Campbell in a tri-meet on November 3 in Boiling Springs, N.C. at 5 p.m. The Aggies will swim at home again on Senior Day, Jan. 26, 2007, against Campbell. |
