AGGIES HEAD TO NEC SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Team looks to improve on last season’s 11th place finish

Landover, Md. – February 16, 2006 - It all comes down to one weekend, one event and a championship for one of 12 teams. North Carolina A&T will conclude the 2006 season at the 2006 Northeast Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, which will begin today and end on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Prince George’s County Sports & Learning Complex.

The 2005-06 season was highlighted by dual meet victories over VMI and Howard University at the Corbett Sports Center pool. Sophomore Gia Wright has recorded eight individual victories while swimming in the breaststroke and medley events. Freshman Donielle Campbell has finished first in six individual races this season.

“I am pleased in the development of our underclassmen,’’ said Hendrix. “They have done what I have expected them to do this year. They are peaking at the right time.”

The Aggies scored 91 points to finish in 11th place at last year’s championships. Although the performance was the team’s best effort in its two-year membership of the conference, head coach Shawn Hendrix feels that her team can do much better. N.C. A&T was picked to finish 9th in this season’s NEC preseason coaches poll.

“This year, we’ve been developing swimmers that can swim different strokes,’’ said Hendrix. “We have such a small team that we have had to do that. The team has worked hard inside and outside of the pool. If we concentrate and swim our strokes, we will do well.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for those under 18, and free for those 10 years old and younger.  All students who attend NEC member institutions with a proper institutional I.D. will be admitted free.
