The North Carolina A&T women’s tennis team ran into a program more advanced than its program, but came away with some encouraging signs as the conference season approaches.

Campbell defeated the Aggies 7-0 at the Aggie Tennis Complex, giving the Aggies their first home loss of the season. But the Aggies did get off to a good start against the veteran Camels as sophomore Jaymee Jones and freshman Winnie Quick won their doubles match against Scarlett Alfonzo and Blanca Saenz. It was the second straight win for the duo as they improved to 3-2 on the season.

“As a pair they are starting to gel,’’ said head coach Andy Smith. “With both being so young, it’s really exciting to see what kind of doubles team they are starting to become. Against a team this good, it was great to see them win.”

The Camels took over from there. They took the doubles point with wins by the teams of Ana and Nina Surviladze and Liza Bensimon and Cristina Garcia. They defeated Christina Ruffin and Danielle McCaskill and Destiny Williams and Revorn Ferguson respectively.

In singles competition, Quick dropped a competitive match against Alfonzo, 6-2, 6-3. After Quick, the Aggies earned just three more points over the remaining five singles matches. The Aggies return home Saturday, Feb. 23 when they face Florida A&M at 1 p.m.
