Winnie Quick wins her first collegiate matchGREENSBORO, February 3, 2008 – Senior Christina Ruffin missed the Aggies Saturday matches against Wofford, Presbyterian and S.C. Upstate by putting student in the word student-athlete. She missed the three matches in one day to take the GRE for advancement into graduate school. Ruffin returned to athletic portion of student-athlete on Sunday to help the Aggies win their first match of the season, 7-0 against arch-rival Winston-Salem State. Ruffin won her match 6-3, 7-5 in what turned out to be a tough win over Laken Joyce. “I noticed she wanted to change the pace of the match,’’ said Ruffin. “When I fell down 3-0 in the second set I realized if I wanted to win I had to make it more of my pace, move her around a bit and put a little more spin on the ball.” Ruffin rallied, even breaking Joyce’s serve a couple of times, to gain the advantage. Ruffin also won in doubles as she teamed with Revorn Ferguson to win the 8-0 over Jessica Smith and Jade Heggins. It was also a good day for freshman Winnie Quick. Quick won the first collegiate match of career with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Johanna Nunez. Danielle McCaskill also got her first collegiate win. McCaskill’s match-up against Heggins was the final match on the court on Sunday. The two battled to a 7-6 McCaskill decision in the first set before the freshman out of Durham dominated the second set with a 6-2 victory. “It was a very good match for the girls,’’ said head coach Andy Smith. “We had a rough weekend, but we came in a little more relaxed today and the result was we played at a higher level.” The Aggies return to action on Saturday, Feb. 9 when they face East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. at 4 p.m. Their next home match is 3p.m., Monday, Feb. 11 against N.C. Central.
