CONWAY, S.C., February 7, 2009 –
Freshman Shondra Redfern earned her first career win, but it was not enough as the North Carolina A&T women’s tennis team lost a pair of matches to Western Carolina and Coastal Carolina respectively.

The Aggies lost to the Catamounts 5-2 and later lost to Coastal Carolina 7-0. Redfern, a Charlotte, native, won her first match by defeating WCU’s Amanda Massey. “She played a very good match,’’ said N.C. A&T head coach Andy Smith. “She played a very good match against a player with a similar style to hers.”

Quick almost captured her first victory of the season. The sophomore out of Greensboro lost in a super tiebreaker to WCU’s Izabella Glinstca. But Jaymee Jones did win for the first time this season. Jones beat Chelsea Best 6-2, 6-4.

“I am disappointed we lost, but we are getting better,’’ said Smith. “We fell behind early in all three of our double matches before we really started playing. If we get off to a fast start in those matches and Winnie pulls out her match, it might have been a different story.”

The Aggies return to action on Monday when they play their first home match of the season against N.C. Central at 3 p.m. They play at home again on Tuesday when they host UNC Asheville at 1 p.m., from the Aggie Tennis Complex.
