MARTIN MAKES FIRST-TEAM ALL-MEAC MEN’S TENNIS
Martin lost just one
match in conference play
GREENSBORO,
N.C., April 21,
2005 –
Sophomore men’s tennis standout Damon Martin was named first-team All-MEAC
Thursday as voted on by MEAC sports information directors and men’s tennis
coaches. Martin, 5-foot-10, 175-pound native of Fort Mill, S.C., posted a
15-4 record this season.
He was 9-1 in the
conference with his only loss coming to MEAC Player of the Year Seo-Jae
Chang out of Hampton. Martin dominated when faced the opponents No. 2
singles player, going 5-0 in those instances. Both of Martin’s brothers
attend N.C. A&T. Brother Jeremy plays on the men’s team, while brother Jared
looks to play next season.
“Damon Martin was really
deserving of MEAC recognition,” said men’s tennis coach James Dunwoody. “He
has played and conducted himself in a professional manner all year long. His
performance this entire year has inspired our team.”
The Aggies finished the
season 8-12 overall and 7-3 in the conference. Two of Martin’s three
non-conference losses came from players who volley for ACC schools North
Carolina and N.C. State.
Damon and Jeremy are not
the first Martin brothers to play tennis at N.C. A&T. Eric Martin, Damon’s
father, is a 1980 graduate of N.C. A&T. Eric Martin played tennis alongside
brother George when he attended the university.
“The Martin family has
meant so much to our tennis program,’’ Dunwoody said. “We certainly are
thankful that the Martin family provided us three of its boys.”
Two of those boys will
try to lead the Aggies to an MEAC title this week in Altamonte, Fla. The
Aggies play Norfolk State at noon today. If they win, Martin and company
will likely face S.C. State.
