Martin brothers win nine matches

ALTAMONTE, Fla. - February 23, 2006 – N.C. A&T men’s tennis coach James Dunwoody has given rave reviews on three brothers that have given the program some stability over the last two seasons. At day one of the annual MEAC Round-Up, Damon, Jeremy and Jared Martin led N.C. A&T to a sweep of Delaware State (6-0) and Coppin State (6-2).

Damon Martin got things started against Delaware State, defeating Abeney Chibisou at No. 1singles 6-3 and 7-5. Jered Martin shut out James Lapore at No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Jared Martin added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Mike Siembida. The Aggies completed the sweep of the singles matches when Quincy Hawley took an 8-0 decision over Adae Amoake.

In the closest match of the day, Vitas Hawley and Londell Hartfield fought off Lapore and Chibisou to win 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. Damon Martin and Porter Myrick finished the Hornets with a win over Siembra and Amoake in No. 2 doubles, 8-0.

The Martins would go undefeated against Coppin State as well. Damon Martin defeated Florin Celea in No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-3), then joined teammate Porter Myrick to defeate Celea and Belind Kellici in No. 2 doubles (8-3). Jeremy Martin knocked off Parker Scott in No. 3 singles (7-5, 6-2), then teamed with brother Jared Martin to win at No. 3 doubles (8-1). Jared Martin capped the day for the Martin family with a shutout of Patrick Phillips at No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-0).

The Aggies will continue action in the Round-Up tomorrow against Howard and Morgan State.
