PITTMAN EXCELS IN ASHEVILLE

Aggies win three singles matches

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – March 27, 2006 – The N.C. A&T women’s tennis played extremely well in falling to UNC Asheville, 4-3, at the UNCA Tennis Center. Three Aggies ended losing streaks in singles matches, while the doubles team of Porche Martin and Shannon Pittman won their fifth match of the season. The Aggies are now 5-11 on the season.

Kathryn Jackson dropped her first set, then dominated in her victory against Mary Katharine Fitzgerald at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Martin cruised at No. 6 singles against Isabel Carson, winning 6-1, 6-1. In the match of the day at No. 5 singles, Pittman dropped a close first set to Lindsay Wooten, 4-6, then battled back to win her second set, 6-2. The two went back and forth, until Pittman smashed a forehand winner to pull out a 15-13 victory in the tiebreaker.

Earlier in the match, Pittman and Martin ended an eight-match losing streak in doubles, defeating Wooten and Carson, 8-4.

The Aggies will visit local rival UNC Greensboro on Saturday, Apr. 1, at 2 p.m. N.C. A&T will host their final home match of the season on Fri. Apr. 7, as they will take on Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m. The match will be the final appearance for seniors Jackson, Pittman, and Tracy Ross
