SPLIT MATCHES TO CONCLUDE ROUNDUPFour Aggies finish 4-2 in singles matches
ALTAMONTE, Fla. – February 25, 2006 – The N.C. A&T women’s tennis team established itself as a MEAC title contender, finishing 4-2 in the three-day MEAC Round-Up. The Aggies split a pair of dual matches, defeating Maryland-Eastern Shore, 6-0, and falling to Hampton, 6-0.
N.C. A&T ran its overall record to 5-3, including 5-2 in MEAC play.
The Aggies swept all matches for the second time this season to earn a shutout over the Lady Hawks. Kathryn Jackson ended a four-match losing streak at No. 1 singles, defeating Nadia Flores, 6-2, 6-1. Christina Ruffin stroked past Aissatou Ba at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-0. Deandra Bailey cruised by Fatoumata Ba, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and Tracy Ross routed Haaveshe Sawyer 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Terika Palmer earned the final singles point for the Aggies, knocking off Obehioye Okojie, 8-1.
N.C. A&T continued its great play in the doubles round, as they won all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Jackson and Ruffin defeated Flores and Aissatou Ba, 8-5. Ross and Bailey teamed to breeze by Sawyer and Shashonna Leak, 8-2, to clinch the doubles point for the Aggies. For good measure, Palmer and Shannon Pittman shut out Fatoumata Ba and Yamada Dorsey, 8-0, to complete the shutout.
Ruffin, Bailey, Ross, and Palmer all finished with 4-2 records in singles play at the Round-Up.
The Aggies
will continue their season on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Longwood University. The
match begins at 11 a.m.
