SMITH HAS NICE FINISH AT MEAC INDOOR

Aggies run well in distance races

LANDOVER, Md., February 17, 2007 – North Carolina A&T did not have anyone win any championships at the 2007 MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, but they young Aggie competitors showed promise for future championships.

The Aggies had two second-place and four third-place finishes during the three-day championship event. The Aggie men came in sixth with a score of 46, while the women placed seventh overall with a score of 30. Hampton won the team championship on the women’s side, while Norfolk State won the men’s team title.

Sophomore Lonnie Phifer continued to be solid for the Aggies with a second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 56-feet, 1 ½ inches. He finished behind Maryland-Eastern Shore’s Kimani Kirton. The Aggies other second-place finish came from Calesio Newman.  

Newman ran the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.88, finishing three-tenths of a second behind Norfolk State’s Brandon Harris. The other men who finished third were Cerone Burnett  in the triple jump and Robert Martin in the 200 meters.

On the women’s side, Kimona Smith grabbed both of the Aggies third place finishes. Smith scored six points in the long and triple jump. In the long jump, she leaped 18-feet, 10-inches. In the triple jump, Smith recorded a jump of 39-feet, 11 inches. The Aggies begin their outdoor season on March 15 in the 49ers Classic on the campus of Charlotte University.
