SPRUIEL WINS 400 METERS IN CHAPEL HILL

Burnett wins the triple jump

CHAPEL HILL, February 5, 2007 Alexandria Spruiel ran the sixth fastest time in the MEAC this season and won the 400 meters with a time of 56.69 at the UNC Indoor Invitational. Spruiel also finished fourth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 25.55.

Spruiel’s only other win this season came when she teamed with others to win the 4x400 relay at Liberty. Spruiel had a previous third-place finish at the UNC Open last month. The sophomore out of Detroit looks to emerge as one of the Aggies top sprinters in the spring.

In the field events, Kimona Smith made the fourth longest leap in the MEAC this season with a jump of 18-feet, 5 ½ inches to finish third over the weekend in the long jump. Smith also jumped into the MEAC top 5 in the high jump over the weekend. Her jump of 38-feet, 4 ¾ inches placed her in forth place at the UNC Invite and it was the fourth-best jump in the MEAC this season.

Other top finishers for the Aggie women included Kendra Newton’s fourth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles and Jennifer Jackson’s sixth-place finish in the 60 meter dash.

On the men’s side, Cerone Burnett continued to perform well in the triple jump. He jumped 47-feet, 5-inches to win the triple jump. He ranks fourth in the conference with that throw, joining four other Aggies in the top 5. Teammate Tarrish Alexander had a fifth-place finish in the long jump, while Lonnie Phifer finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 52-feet, 2-inches.

The Aggies best sprinter over the weekend was Antonio Lee, who had a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.25.
