Aggies run well in distance races CHAPEL HILL, January 13, 2007 – Lonnie Phifer continued to grow into his role as the Aggies leader in field events. The sophomore out of Smith High School in Greensboro finished third in the shot put with a throw of 52-feet, one-inch at the UNC Opener on Saturday. Phifer was among seven Aggie men to finish in the top 10 in Chapel Hill. Phifer finished second in the shot put at the indoor MEAC Championships last season and was the conference’s outdoor champion in the event last spring. Phifer hasn’t finished below fifth in his last six events. In the distance races, the Aggies continued to show improvement. Reggie McAfee finished eighth in the mile, while Kavaughn Brown had a 10th place finish in the 5000 meter run. Calesio Newman had the best day of any Aggies sprinter with a fifth place finish in the 60 meter dash. Cerone Burnett placed sixth in the 200 meter dash. On the women’s side, the Aggies had four top 10 finishes, including Jennifer Jackson’s sixth place finish in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.65. Teammate Jerrine Foster had a sixth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 42-feet, ¾ inches. The Aggies are back in action next week when they return to Chapel Hill for the UNC Invitational. |
