AGGIES TRACK HAS A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN '08

The men’s and women’s track and field outdoor teams begin making their charge toward regional and national qualifying on March 7 in the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C. The Coastal Carolina Invitational is a two-day event.

The Aggies hold their first home event on April 5 when they participate in the Murray Neely Relays.

The Aggies will host two other events, including the International Friendship and Freedom Games on April 17 and 18. The North Carolina A&T invitational at Irwin Belk Track will take place on May 11.

The Aggie women return nine regional qualifiers, including junior sprinter Alexandria Spruiel who also qualified for the NCAA nationals. The Aggie women’s 4x400 relay team also returns intact, which includes Spruiel.

Loreal Smith, who won the 400 meter hurdles conference championship last season, also returns for the Aggies along with sophomore jumper Kimona Smith. Smith won the MEAC outdoor long jump championship and finished third in the triple jump. MEAC Outdoor discus champion Jerrine Foster returns for her sophomore season.

On the men’s side, the Aggies get two key performers back in hurdler Gordon Smith and sprinter Erick Worthington. Both men sat out the 2006 season. Smith won the 2005 MEAC Outdoor Championship in the 400 meter hurdles.

The Aggies go for more gold on May 4-6 in Baltimore as a part of the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The NCAA East Regionals begin May 30.
