Freshman thrower Robert Boulware looks like he should be a defensive lineman. At the Carolina Fast Times Indoor Invitational he looked as if he might be a big part of the North Carolina A&T track program in the future.

The 6-foot-4 Winston-Salem, N.C., native placed second in the men’s shot put with a best throw of 50-feet, 6 ¾ inches. It was the highest finish for the Aggies during the event. Boulware finished three-fourths of an inch behind Davidson’s Wil Funderburg.

Boulware visited N.C. A&T during the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships in which he participated in. He liked the school and the facilities and decided to attend N.C. A&T.

“What you like about Robert is he is willing to do what it takes to be the best,’’ said director of track and field programs Roy Thompson. “He came in here and lost about 50 or 60 pounds. He studies his events and works at getting better. I think he is going to be an outstanding thrower before he leaves A&T.”

The Aggies veteran thrower Lonnie Phifer (Jr., Greensboro, N.C.) had a throw of 56-feet, 2-inches to place third in the men’s shot put invitational event. Another Aggie veteran, Ron Buchanan, finished fifth in the men’s triple jump invitational with a leap of 48-feet, 6 ¾ inches.

On the women’s side, many of the Aggie experienced athletes didn’t compete. Junior Carmenta Mitchell finished seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 58.59. Sophomore Katherine Forrester had seventh place finish in the women’s shot put invitational with a throw of 43-feet, 4 ¼ inches.

The Aggies head to New York Feb. 8-9 to participate in the New Balance Collegiate Indoor Invitational. It will be the final race before the Aggies compete in the MEAC Indoor Championships Feb. 15-16 in Landover, Md.
