SPRUIEL WINS FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Spruiel has won two events in two meets so far this season

GREENSBORO, January 24, 2008 The Mid-Eastern Athletic instituted a Track and Field Athlete of the Week starting this indoor and outdoor season. Considering the recent hot streak junior sprinter Alexandria Spruiel has been on recently, it’s fitting that she is the first Aggies track and field athlete to earn the honor.

Spruiel won the 400 meters at the Niswonger Indoor Invitational at East Tennessee State with a time of 55.21 to earn MEAC Track and Field Athlete of the Week.

“She is progressing into a fabulous athlete, ‘’ said James Daniels, who coaches Aggie sprinters. “When you see how hard she works you can’t help but be proud of her. She is one of those athletes you look forward to coaching and she is a great representative of N.C. A&T.”

In June Spruiel was the only track athlete to represent N.C. A&T in the NCAA Nationals, advancing to Sacramento, Calif., thanks to a fifth-place finish in the NCAA East Regional at the University of Florida. Spruiel also won gold twice at the MEAC Championships in Baltimore last May when she won the 400 meters and was a part of the 4x400 relay team.

Not satisfied to live on what she did last season, Spruiel started the 2008 indoor season by breaking a school record in the 500 meters by running a time of 1:12.20 at the Virginia Tech Invitational. At Niswonger, Spruiel had a third-place finish in the 200 meters.

Spruiel and the Aggies are back in action this weekend in College Station, Pa., when they compete in the Penn State National Invitational.
