The challenge to North Carolina A&T Track and Field men’s sprinter Calesio Newman this season was to take himself to the next level as a sprinter, thereby not being complacent with a decent freshman season.

Thus far Newman has taken that challenge in stride. At the Wake Forest Open, Newman placed first in the 200 meters with a time of 20.89. His time not only broke a school record, but it also qualified him for the East Regional at Florida State.

“Calesio is a very talented runner,’’ said director of track and field programs Roy Thompson. “He was a runner-up in the conference last season, which is not bad for a freshman, but it leaves room for a lot of improvement going forward. He is doing those things that will make him a great athlete here.”

Newman is still looking for his first conference title indoor or outdoor. He has performed well at Wake Forest before. He finished second in the 100 meters at the Wake Forest Open last season. Newman now has a win in outdoor to go along with a first-place finish he had in indoor. He was the only Aggie – men or women – to finish in first over the weekend.

Lonnie Phifer had a third-place finish in the men’s shot put with a best throw of 55-feet, 11-inches. Robert Boulware finished eighth in the same event. The next highest finish for an Aggie men’s athlete was Robert Buchanan’s fourth place finish in the triple jump.

On the women’s side, Kimona Smith and Hampton’s Rachel Lewis gave the crowd a preview of what’s to come in the MEAC Championships. Lewis won this match-up by placing first in the triple jump with a leap of 41-feet, 5 ¼ inches. Smith placed second with a jump of 40-feet, 9 ½ inches. Smith had a third-place finish in the long jump.

The N.C. A&T women’s 4x100 team finished second behind Wake Forest. Meanwhile, Katherine Forrester finished fourth in the shot put (45-feet, 3-inches) and seventh in the discus with a best throw of 137-feet, 3-inches.

The Aggies are back in action when they compete in the Raleigh Relays next week.  the Virginia Tech Invitational.
