Newman places second in the 60 meters HAMPTON, Va., January 25, 2009 – Senior Lonnie Phifer appears ready to close out his marvelous North Carolina A&T track and field career with a bang. In the meantime, he is also grooming his replacement – sophomore Robert Boulware. Phifer and Boulware finished in 1st and 2nd place respectively in the men’s shot put at the Hampton Invitational over the weekend. Phifer was the Aggies only first-place finisher. Phifer used a throw of 55-feet, 1 ½ inches to win his first indoor event of the season. Two weeks ago at Virginia Tech, he finished in second with a throw of 56-feet, 8 ½ inches. Boulware, who came in fifth place at Virginia Tech, came in second with his best throw being 55-feet, 11 ¼ inches. Boulware and Phifer have made for a dynamic tandem since last season when Boulware stepped on the scene with a second-place finish in the shot put at the University of North Carolina. Sprinter Calesio Newman had the only second-place finish for the Aggie men. He finished second in the 60 meters with a time of 6.91. Freshman Jarrell Elliot finished third in the 400 meters with a time of 49.59. On the women’s side, Katherine Forrester had a second-place finish in the women’s shot put with a throw of 42-feet, 11 ½ inches. Two other Aggie women had second-place finishes. Junior Kimona Smith, last season’s indoor triple and long jump MEAC champion, finished second in the women’s triple jump. She jumped 39-feet, 8 ½ inches to finish behind S.C. State’s Jasmine Smith. Freshman Khadeen Issacs had a second-place finish in the women’s high jump. Issacs’ best jump was 5-feet, 4 ¼ inches. Loreal Smith and Krystin Lawson had the third place finishes for the Aggie women. Smith, the MEAC indoor champion in the 60 meter hurdles, finished with a time of 8.42. Lawson ran a 25.35 in the 200 meters. The Aggies travel to Penn State for the school’s National Invitational Jan. 30-31.
