LANDOVER, Md., February 18, 2006
– North Carolina A&T senior sprinter Justin Byron did what comes naturally to him. He won championships. Bryon was named Men’s Outstanding Performer of the 2006 MEAC Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships at Prince George’s Sports and Learning Center.

Byron earned 20 points and won the 200 meters with a MEAC indoor championship record time of 21.35.

Byron finished second in the 400 and seventh in the 60-meter dash to close out another successful indoor championship for the senior out of Tempe Hills, Md. Bryon has two indoor MEAC 200 meter titles and two 400 meter conference titles.

He broke Hampton’s Jerome Mathis (now Pro Bowl kick returner for the Houston Texans) record of 21.48 set in 2003.

Senior jumper Brandon Via also added to his collection of indoor titles. Via won indoor triple for the second straight season. His jump of 51-feet, 6-inches was slight lower than his leap of 52-feet in 2005.

Via and Byron’s performances help the Aggie men earn third place overall behind team champion Norfolk State (133 points)) and second-place Hampton (86 points) with 74 points. Via and Byron combined to account for 39 of those points. Via finished fourth in the long jump, one spot ahead of teammate Cerone Burnette.

Lonnie Phifer gave director of track programs Roy Thompson hope for the Aggies future field events by placing second in the shot put with a throw of 50-feet. Jimmie Fields, Gordon Smith and Dominique Camm all scored for the Aggies in the high jump by finishing fourth, fifth and seventh respectively. Ron Buchanan also scored for the Aggies in the triple jump with a fifth place finish.

There were no individual titles on the women’s side. Seniors Courtney Clark and Lauren Taylor were the standouts for the Aggie women. Clark finished third in the 400 meters, sixth in the 200 meters and the team of Clark, Carmenta Mitchell, PhyKesha Blackmon and Alexandria Spruiel placed second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:45.26.

Taylor earned a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.36 sec.) and a third-place finish in the long jump (19-feet, 6-inches).

The Aggie indoor track team has two more events scheduled before the March 9-11 NCAA Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. The Aggies will then begin their outdoor season at home when they host the Aggie Team Challenge at Irwin Belk Track on March 18.
