GREENSBORO (October 3, 2017) – Freshman setter Edie Brewer’s 25 assists, 13 kills and 11 digs on Tuesday night represented the first triple double dating back to 1994 for North Carolina A&T volleyball program. It propelled the Aggies to a 3-1(22-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-18) victory in their final non-conference match of the season against the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs at Moore Gymnasium.

“Edie came here to make history and that was something that she was able to accomplish tonight,” said head coach Hal Clifton. “We coach her on hitting effectively, defense and making good decisions while setting. She did that tonight, put everything together and it was exciting to watch.”

Brewer had a breakout match with season-highs in both hitting percentage (.455) and kills (13) while tying a season-best in blocks (3). The Aggies finished with 53 kills and 45 assists which were also season-highs. Freshman Milanna Morgan anchored the N.C. A&T defense with a season-high 18 digs.

Freshman Courteney Pitt posted her best hitting percentage (.273) of the season with nine kills and three attack errors on 22 attempts. Junior Megan Wiggins recorded a season-high 15 assists. A&T finished with 10 team blocks to the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ five. Senior Samara Brown led the offense with 13 kills and a solo block. Senior Alyssa Pitt had 10 kills with three blocks and senior Jasmine Lindor collected six blocks.

The Aggies are 9-9 heading back into conference play. They have already matched their win total from last season as well as their highest win total under Clifton’s seven-year tenure. N.C. A&T is .500 or better in the month of October for the first time since they were 8-6 on Oct. 3, 2006.

“So many people have contributed to this program over the last seven years and have laid the foundation for this group to build from,” said Clifton. “Our team is focused, and we are working hard daily in the gym and it is starting to show off. If we can stay focused and oriented, good things will happen for us.”

Early on, nice things were happening for Gardner-Webb. GWU recorded their best hitting percentage (.360) in the first set. Kaelyn Dyson and Nicole Celarek led GWU with four kills apiece. Despite that, the Aggies crept to within two at 22-20 on a Courteney Pitt kill. The Aggies traded points with the Bulldogs from there, never able to get any closer than two as Molly Johnston closed the set with a kill. Courtney Pitt had five kills on eight attempts in the set.

N.C. A&T’s defense stiffened from there as GWU was not able to hit better than .100 in any of the next three sets. Brewer powered N.C. A&T with five kills and a service ace in the second set, yet the Aggies still had to rally.

Trailing 14-11, Alyssa Pitt fired one of her three kills in the set and then a pair of attack errors tied set at 14. Aided by three GWU attack errors and two Brown kills, the Aggies took a 21-17 advantage. GWU scored the next three points before Ms. Brewer tattooed a kill to halt the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ momentum. A service error moved GWU back to within one at 22-21, but two Brewer kills and a ball handling error from GWU tied the match at 1.

The third set was completely dominated by N.C. A&T. The Aggies totaled 17 kills on 30 attacks with only three errors to sport a .467 hitting percentage. Brown had six kills and a service ace, Alyssa Pitt had four kills and Courteney Pitt added three kills. Defensively, Lindor assisted on two blocks.

The momentum continued into the fourth behind Brewer’s offense. She blasted six kills on nine attempts, had five digs, an ace and a block all in the final set. The Aggies led from beginning to end to close out the match.

N.C. A&T will close out a three-match homestand this weekend with Savannah State on Friday at 7 p.m., and South Carolina State on Sunday at 2 p.m.

“Our non-conference schedule was very balanced and had very similar teams that we will face in the MEAC, so I am confident going into Friday’s match. We fought out a tough win at North Carolina Central, but our team keeps battling and every day we talk about competing. We are starting to develop a higher volleyball IQ on the court, and it is really paying off for them.”
