GREENSBORO - The North Carolina A&T women's tennis team
defeated Fayetteville State 7-0 in a non-conference match
at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center on Friday. The match was the first of two
for the Aggies on Friday.
The win marked the Aggies first
shutout win since April 10, 2010 when they beat Savannah State 7-0.
The afternoon began with three
doubles matches. A&T's No. 2 and three teams blew out their opponents 8-0,
while Aggies' No. 1 team (Cayla Cross and Azeib Nigatu) had stiffer
competition, but still beat the Broncos duo of Varice Love and Brittney William
8-2.
In the singles matches, sophomore
Kimberly Stalling, junior April Burrage and freshman Kenya Colbert won the No.
4, 5 and 6 singles matches 6-0 respectively.
"As usual the ladies were very
intense and along with intensity come effort. [Fayetteville State's] defense
was covered up by our intensity," said head coach James Dunwoody. "I am very
proud of Kenya Colbert today for her first singles win in Division I tennis. I
am also proud of Victorea Austin, who was promoted today from No. 6 to No. 3.
"I hope she keeps improving. We have
a chance to be great, we just need to develop that killer instinct and stop
playing so happy," Dunwoody added.
