GREENSBORO - There is a lot of good news surrounding the North
Carolina A&T volleyball program. Head coach Hal Clifton announced the
conclusion of his spring season on Saturday. He also recently announced a
five-player class that includes everything from a true setter to a defensive
libero.
A&T's spring session was a competitive six-week timeframe
in which the Aggies competed in events at Gardner-Webb, Campbell and Radford. The
Aggies instructional period started in January.
"Those events allowed us the opportunity to put into match
situations things we've been working on in individual sessions," said Clifton. "The
goal of the spring is to take the time to work on each players' individual
needs. Through small group training and team training, we were able to get the
reps we needed to improve each players' skills, which will ultimately improve
the overall team."
A&T's five signees will team with their seven returning
players in 2012 in an effort to start the rebuilding process in Aggieland. The
Aggies will be looking to return to MEAC tournament play for the first time
since the 2007 season. They can build upon middle hitter Jenea Daniels who came
on strong toward the end of the season to record double-figures kills in five
of A&T's final eight matches.
"The spring matches allowed us a chance to try some players
out in different positions, but most importantly it allowed us to compete as a
team. "
The Aggies open the season on August 24 at the Western
Carolina Wildcat Classic in Cullowhee, N.C. They are scheduled to play St.
Peter's at 4 p.m.
