NORFOLK, Va. - On Wednesday, the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference released a couple of lists concerning softball and North Carolina
A&T was well represented.
Two Aggies were named All-MEAC with first baseman Juanita
Jernigan earning first team honors. A&T third baseman Tranea Jones was a
second-team selection.
The conference also released its All-Academic honorees
for softball, and A&T had half of its 12-person roster listed.
Catcher Sabrina Edmonds, infielder Hope Fletcher, utility
player Tiffany Macklin, center fielder Dominique Smith, designated player
Erica Turner and Jones were all
recognized for maintaining a 3.0 grade point average or higher.
"I think it is
absolutely awesome," said head coach Mamie Jones about Jernigan and Jones
making first-team All-MEAC. "JJ and Tranea both are deserving of their
perspective recognitions. Both worked
Jernigan was having an MVP-type season before a pulled
hamstring slowed her down midway through the month of April. Jernigan enters
the tournament batting .358 with five home runs and 23 RBI in 37 games played.
In six separate games this season; Jernigan had at least three hits, including
a stretch of three straight games between April 7-10 where she had three hits
in each of those games.
Jones (5-6, Hickory, N.C.) excelled in conference play.
In 15 games against MEAC opponents, Jones batted .348 with two home runs, four
doubles and seven RBI. She went 4-for-8 with two doubles and one home run in a
three-game sweep of S.C. State in late March.
As the MEAC tournament begins, Jones is hitting .319 and
is tied for the team lead in doubles with nine.
On the academic side, Jones majors in social work. She is
also an A&T scholar athlete and a National Fastpitch Coaches Association
scholar athlete. Edmonds (5-8, Riverside, Calif.) had a great season at the
plate with a .310 batting average. She is a nursing and psychology major. Edmonds
leads the MEAC in home runs with 10.
Fletcher (5-4, Cincinnati, Ohio) was a second-team
All-MEAC selection in 2011. She was recently recognized as the player with
highest grade point average on the softball team with a 3.68 as a fashion
merchandise and design major. This is her second academic honor from the MEAC.
She is also an A&T and NFCA scholar. Tiffany Macklin (5-2, Rocky Mount, N.C.)
is a psychology major who provides the Aggies with a player who can play
multiple positions. She has been the Aggies second baseman and left fielder
this season.
Smith (5-6, Altamonte Springs, Fla.) is the Aggies
leadoff hitter. She is a fashion merchandise and design major, batting .281
with two home runs, eight stolen bases and 19 RBI. She leads the Aggies in runs
scored with 29. Turner (5-5, Kaiserslautern, Germany) rounds out the academic
honors for A&T. She is a computer science major who is the Aggies
designated player.
