CHIT CHAT: North Carolina A&T is trying to avoid
what happened at Delaware State. A week after pummeling Howard 38-10, the
Aggies were blanked by Delaware State 24-0. The Aggies are coming off of an
impressive win over Norfolk State in front of more than 20,000 fans at Aggie
Stadium. Now, they're trying to avoid a letdown with Florida A&M coming
into town. The Aggies are going after their first winning season in nine years,
and will have two home games (including Saturday) to try and accomplish the
feat.
From the
coach:
North Carolina A&T
head coach Rod Broadway
"Florida A&M is very athletic on both sides of the ball.
They have tremendous athletes everywhere you turn. They're going to get after
you defensively and then they're going to use those athletes they have to go
downfield on you on offense. When you look at, we're playing a lot of walk-on
guys, and we're going to have to get it done with those guys. We've love to have those type of athletes and
once we get our scholarships back, those are the type of athletes we're going
to try to bring here." But the guys we have are doing a great job.'
It's A
"Lock": A&T will
run a two-quarterback system on Saturday. Broadway said redshirt junior Lewis Kindle is more of a traditional
drop-back passer, while freshman Kwashaun
Quick can beat you with his feet. Quick replaced Kindle last week to open
the second half, and completed turned the game in A&T's favor. The Aggies
outscored the Spartans 23-0 in the second half to win 30-9. Quick is the
favorite to start, but the Rattlers should see plenty of Kindle as well.
Potential Gameday Star power: North Carolina
A&T: Ricky Lewis seemed to do his best work
last Saturday when the elusive Kwashaun Quick was playing quarterback. Quick is
such a threat with the ball, it opened up running lanes for Lewis who finished
with 81 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. FAMU: Florida A&M's quarterback is
awfully good. Damien Fleming has thrown 15 touchdown passes and only four interceptions.
He has two excellent receivers in Lenworth Lennox and Travis Harvey. They are
2,3 in the conference in receiving. Fleming is 17th in the nation in
passing efficiency.
The Magic
Number For A&T: 92: North Carolina A&T will
celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1992 MEAC Football Championship.
The team will be honored at halftime. Many believed the '92 team would not
repeat because they lost all-everything quarterback Connell Maynor along with two
other players who were drafted by the NFL - defensive end Reggie White and tight
end Craig Thompson. Yet, the Aggies came together behind a ferocious offensive
line and collection of running backs - James White, Barry Turner, Rudy Brown
and Fred Ingram - who were the envy of the MEAC. The Blue Death Defense was as
stingy as ever with MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, linebacker Rodney Edwards,
and first-team All-MEAC corner Alonza Barnett. The Aggies rolled through the
conference with a 5-1 record. They were 9-3 overall.
FROM THE
NOTES
The Remarkable A&T 'D'
The average size of the starting North
Carolina A&T defensive line is 6-foot-1, 248 pounds. The average size of
A&T's is 5-11, 217 pounds. In other words, the Aggies are not very big on
the defensive side of the ball. Despite being small in stature, they have the
No. 2 defense in the nation and the No. 1 defense in the MEAC. The Aggies are
only allowing 279.4 yards per game, while holding opponents to 113.6 yards per
game on the ground. A&T is coming off of a performance where they did not
allow Norfolk State into the end zone. On three separate occasions this season,
the Aggies have not allowed an opponent to score a touchdown. At home, opponents
have only scored 37 points against the Aggies defense in five games. In the process,
opponents are averaging 99.8 yards per game on the ground at Aggie Stadium. The
Aggies are also No. 1 in the conference in rushing defense and passing efficiency
defense.
Quarterback Changes
North Carolina A&T has had its
share of quarterback changes over the past few seasons. Last season, Lewis Kindle became the
first A&T quarterback in a decade to start every game of a season. Kindle's
consecutive games started streak ended after the first game of 2012 when he sat
out against Coastal Carolina because of a suspension. The Aggies head into this
week with some uncertainty as who the starter will be after Kwashaun Quick
replaced Kindle in the second half of the Aggies 30-9 win over Norfolk State. In
the 10 seasons prior to 2011, the Aggies have played 19 different quarterbacks
with 12 of them getting starts.
