A&T Cruises To Victory In Season Opener
GREENSBORO - North Carolina A&T dominated smaller Greensboro College in the post to win its men's basketball season opener 83-52 Friday night at Corbett Sports Center. DaMetrius Upchurch led four Aggies in double figures with 14 points. Lamont Middleton added 13 points and Adrian Powell finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
The Aggies outscored The Pride 54-8 in the paint and shot 29-for-49 from inside the 3-point arc.
"We're just glad to get this first one out of the way," said A&T head coach Cy Alexander. "I know we had the two exhibition games, but this is our first real game. It gave us a chance to get the kinks and still get a win. I think we have a lot of improving to do, but all the mistakes we made are correctable."
Alexander was dismayed at the Aggies 17 turnovers, but found solace in the fact the Aggies also had 17 assists. A&T took a 28-16 lead on a Jeremy Underwood runner in the lane. The Pride went on an 8-0 run fueled by five points from Luqman Tijani. A&T quickly responded by scoring nine straight points to take a 37-24 lead with 5:01 remaining in the first half. Powell had seven points during the run, and The Pride never got the lead under double figures the rest of the way.
Tijani led The Pride with 29 points on 10-for-14 shooting. The Aggies return to action 7 p.m., Monday when they face Utah Valley at Corbett Sports Center.
