BLACKSBURG, Va. -- A
day after being named MEAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, sophomore Kendrick
Smith continued the nice start to his indoor season during the first day of the
Virginia Tech Invitational.
Last week, Smith won the men's triple jump at the Tiger
Classic in Clemson, S.C., with a 48-foot, 6-inch jump. On Friday, Smith jumped 47-feet, 10-inches to
finish fifth in Blacksburg, Va. But it was his twin brother Keenan who had the
higher finish. Keenan placed second in the triple jump 48-feet, 6 ¾ inches. On
the track, Keenan placed fourth in the 300 meters with a time of 35.43.
Other Aggie men also performed well. Joining Keenan Smith in
the top of the 300 meters was senior Torrance Womack and sophomore Ashanti
Foster-Felder. Womack's 34.01 earned him second, while Foster-Felder came in
seventh in 35.75.
Darryl Williams qualified for the 60 meter finals in 6.90,
and then proceeded to finish fourth in the fourth in the finals with a time of
6.83. Redshirt junior Jeffery Lewis had a qualifying time of 8.29 in the 60
meter hurdles, and later placed fifth in the finals in 8.13.
Juanita Weaver had the only top-10 finish for the women as
she placed 10th in the weight throw thanks to a 47-foot, 10 ½ inch
toss.
Day two of the Virginia Tech Invitational will start Saturday
morning at 11 with the men's high jump. The first track event, the 5000 meters,
will begin at 12:15 p.m.
