freshman Eboni Ross of the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team garnered
her third straight and sixth overall MEAC Rookie of the Week honors on Monday,
while junior Tracy King picked up her third career MEAC Defensive Player of the
Week hono
rs.
Ross,
who has been starting at the center position in the place of the injured senior
Nikia Gorham since January, helped the Aggies to a 2-0 mark last week with
20-plus point road wins over Savannah State and N.C. Central. Ross scored 11 points against Savannah State
and recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in Durham. She also totaled five blocks and four steals
in the two games, and shot 71 percent (12-for-17) from the floor and 63 percent
(5-for-8) from the free throw line.
She
has scored in double figures in four straight games.
Defensively is Ross has made her biggest impact. She
is second in the conference with 1.7 blocked shots per game. Her 43 blocks ties
her with Lamona Smalley for ninth place on the all-time single-season blocked
shots list. Malveata Johnson's 96 blocks in 2000-01 is still the standard.
Ross
also won MEAC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 3 and Jan. 7, Jan. 21, Feb. 11, and
Feb. 18. Her six MEAC Rookie of the Week
awards ties her with Tiffanie Adair, who won the honor six times in 2011-12 en
route to MEAC All-Rookie honors.
King
led the team with seven rebounds and five steals at Savannah State on Feb.
18. She also had a pair of steals and
five boards at N.C. Central. She also
totaled 15 points and four assists on the week. She won the MEAC Defensive
Player of the Week award twice last season.
King is third on the team in scoring with an average of 9.9 points per
game. She is averaging 12.4 points in
MEAC contests this season.
