A&T Falls To Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.  --  Sabrina Edmonds continued her hot streak, but the North Carolina A&T softball team could not slow down the top team in the MEAC Southern Division. Bethune-Cookman defeated the Aggies 5-1 in what was the first game of what was supposed to be a Saturday doubleheader at Sunnyland Park.

The second game was postponed because of rain in the first inning. The two teams will begin play at 11 a.m., Sunday with the A&T leading 1-0 in the first inning. Edmonds went 2-for-2 on Saturday. She is 10-for-14 at the plate in her last five games. She is now hitting .402 on the season.

Bethune-Cookman’s Calesha Shelley went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Teammate Aurelia Gamch was 3-for-4 for with a run scored. Shanel Tolbert (7-21) picked up the win after holding the Aggies to five hits over seven innings. She struck out five. Shelby Snyder (4-4) struck out three in four innings in the loss.

After Michelle Banuelos-Smith drove in a run in the first inning for the Wildcats (12-30, 6-0 MEAC), B-CU put together two more runs in the second. Sophia Ortega doubled in a run for a 2-0 B-CU lead. After Wanda Darby struck out, Gamch tripled to score Ortega.

The Aggies (6-27, 4-6 MEC) only run of the game came in the seventh when Raven Smith homered to center field. It was her sixth of the season.
